Pripyat, Ukraine probably is not the ideal place to visit, but I absolutely love the haunting pictures of the ghost town. Pripyat was the town where Chernobyl was located.
For you, who do not know what Chernobyl was, here's a belief overview. Chernobyl was a the first chemical power plant in Soviet Ukraine. It was started on 1970, with the first reactor being finished in 1977, the second in 1978, the third in 1981, the fourth in 1983, and the fifth was being built in 1986, when disaster struck. On April 26, 1986 at 01:23 (Moscow Time UTC+3), the fourth reactor had a meltdown and ended up exploding. The meltdown let off more radiation than the 1945 atomic bomb dropping in Hiroshima, Japan. The town of Pripyat was evacuated. Since the evacuation in 1986, the town of Pripyat, Ukraine has been abandoned. The town is not safe for constant living. However, tourist are allowed to come visit the town of Pripyat and Chernobyl, but one cannot stay for more have a few hours. Now, I know Pripyat is not the ideal spot to visit, but I have always been fascinated by the history. The pictures of the town and Chernobyl (as seen on this page)are hauntingly beautiful. Pripyat, Ukraine would be an amazing place to photograph. |
